Subaru Impreza WRX Still Turns Heads

Posted on December 21, 2025

If you grew up in the ‘90s or early 2000s, chances are the sound of gravel spitting from spinning tyres and the unmistakable bark of a flat-four engine meant just one thing: Colin McRae was on your TV, and rallying was at its peak.

The Colin McRae Rally era wasn’t just a motorsport moment it was a cultural movement. It was the PlayStation generation’s gateway into real driving passion. It was muddy, chaotic, brave, and brilliantly unpredictable. And right in the centre of the storm…A bright blue Subaru Impreza, gold wheels blazing, carving through forests like a missile with a steering wheel.

That car became a legend. And Subaru, knowing exactly what they had on their hands, gave us a road-going version that captured all the spirit of the rally stages: the Impreza WRX.

This wasn’t some watered-down tribute. The WRX was, and still is a raw, exhilarating experience. At RNG Classics, we’re proud to have a 2001 WRX in our fleet. And every time someone takes it out, the reaction is pure joy!

It’s the way it burbles on start-up, then whirs and howls under load. The way you hear and feel the turbo spool up, then that satisfying psssshhh as the dump valve lets go. The WRX doesn’t just go fast, it feels fast. And with its legendary all-wheel-drive system, it grips like it’s on rails, even when the road throws its worst at you. I challenge anyone to find a better winter craft to deal with wet roads and rainy conditions?!

There’s a kind of magic to the early 2000s WRX models. No screens, no driving modes, no fuss just a turbocharged engine, a manual gearbox, and a chassis that makes you want to find every twisty B-road on the map. It’s a car that rewards the driver, not the algorithm.

At RNG Classics, we believe cars like this deserve to be driven, not left locked in garages ready for anyone who wants to reconnect with a time when driving was loud, physical, and seriously fun!
