Maintaining a classic car is more than just a task, it’s a labour of love that keeps these timeless machines on the road and in their prime. One essential practice is regular oil changes. Engine oil isn’t just lubrication; it’s a protective barrier that prevents metal-on-metal contact. Over time the additives that provide this protection degrade, making fresh oil and additives a must.
Classic cars differ from modern daily drivers, which typically warm up during longer commutes. Classics, often started infrequently or left idling need more care. Proper driving, not just idling is crucial. A drive warms up the oil, puts the drivetrain and suspension through their paces, and ensures all components operate as intended. So it’s lucky that we drive them like a daily car and parts of our fleet are always out somewhere for a road trip, event or brand activation.
And here’s a golden rule – never rev your engine or push for power when it’s cold. This is especially critical for carbureted engines where an overly rich mixture can wash away the protective oil film on your engine’s bores. Wait for the oil to warm up your engine will thank you.
Our advice is change your oil annually whether or not you’ve racked up miles. Fresh oil is cheap insurance for your engine’s longevity. And a good additive from Wynns doesn’t go amiss!
Recently we returned an MGB GT to its former glory after some years in dry storage. It’s now roaring again through its sports exhaust thanks to an engine service (including lovely new oil of course) brake and clutch overhaul, some electrical tinkering and some uprates with starter and distributor.
A little maintenance goes a long way to keep classics alive and thriving!
