Some cars live hard lives. Others, like this 1971 Ford Mustang Mach 1, seem to bide their time, waiting for the right moment to roar back into the world.
Imported to the UK around 1973, this Mach 1 had its last MOT in 1975. Since then, it’s sat quietly in a series of garages, accumulating just 11,000 miles in over five decades. A genuine low-mileage survivor, hidden in plain sight.
But no car built like this is meant to be hidden forever.
Fifteen years ago, the bodywork was carefully restored and the rust removed, with a full repaint in Pewter Metallic a striking, period-correct colour that gives the car a refined but menacing presence. Then, around a year ago, the heart of the beast was brought back to life.
Under the bonnet sits a rebuilt 351 Cleveland V8 with the legendary 4V heads, now upgraded with a Comp Cams performance camshaft kit, Holley 4-barrel carburettor, and Mallory electronic ignition. It exhales through Hooker long-tube headers into a dual 2.5-inch system finished with Flowmaster 40 mufflers—widely regarded as the ultimate soundtrack for a proper muscle car.
Power is delivered through a 4-speed Toploader manual gearbox, complete with a factory Hurst shifter, into a 9” rear axle with a locking 3.25 differential. It’s raw, mechanical, and built for the open road.
Inside, it’s classic Mustang cool with the optional Comfortweave interior with bucket seats and a fold-down rear bench gives you the feel of a grand tourer, with just enough edge to remind you it’s still a brawler underneath. Outside, the Mach 1 decals, rear spoiler, Magnum 500 wheels, and BF Goodrich T/A tyres with raised white lettering complete the look. It’s everything a Mach 1 should be—aggressive, purposeful, and unapologetically American.
At RNG Classics, we’re proud to be the next custodians of this car’s story. From garage queen to road-going hero, this Mach 1 is more than just a classic, it’s a time capsule with a second chance.
